Environmental Management System (EMS)
The Environmental Management System (EMS) refers to a system used by an Organisation to manage its activities, product, or services in such a way to minimize or eliminate the adverse impacts on environmental. More explicitly, the EMS is that part of the overall management system viz. organizational structure, planning activities, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes, and resources which are necessary for developing, implementing, reviewing and maintaining the organisation’s environmental policy.
The Environmental Management System is a preventive system consisting of three components namely:
- Design or development of elements of Environmental management system
- Documentation and
- Implementation
There is a discernible trend in the corporate world of projection individual image as that of environmentally sound enterprise adoption of “Environmental Charters” implementation of “Responsible Care Programmes” environmental reporting through annual reports are all desirable but sporadic efforts in this direction. The environmental management system satisfies the environmental issues of the organization as well as different stakeholder e.g. employees, shareholders, regulatory authorities, customers and general public as well. Also, quality can be defined by technical specification and so satisfying the customers is relatively easier.
Why implement an Environmental Management System?
With the growing Environmental system awareness, compulsions and competition, it is becoming imperative to not only manufacture but source raw materials and sell products in a manner that is environmentally acceptable. Global trade henceforth would reinforce flow of green goods and services, in which only environmentally responsible companies shall be able to retain and enhance their share of growing international market. Some of key reasons that why to implement Environmental management system are as follows.
- Systematic approach
- Improved communication
- Improved compliance
- Improved profitability
- Reduction in liability and risk
- Improved internal management
- Confidence with stakeholders
- Improved employee confidence / faith
- Market credibility / image
- Improved emergency preparedness
While all industrial enterprises are required to comply with growing number of environmental regulations, it is only those, who seek to demonstrate environmental performance far beyond compliance, would be the market leaders. Environmental Management System (EMS) certification is one such opportunity that can enable the companies to acquire the label of environmentally sound enterprises and improves their economic performance at the same time.
Developing an Environmental Management System
The organisation with any type and size may develop its own Environmental Management System to address environmental issues arising out of its activities, products and services. The environment elements of such an organization system may be decided by the organisation itself depending upon the requirements. The main purpose of the organizations’ environmental management system has to be designed and developed is that the system may be functioning well to enhance the environmental performance. The third-party certification of EMS as per specification recognised standards has been introduced.
The International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) has developed comprehensive ISO 14000 series of standards for the Environmental Management system. Identical to this ISO 14001 standard, British standards (BS EN ISO 14001: 1996) are also developed. An organisation can develop EMS as per these specifications and guidelines. Thus the scope of globally verified Environmental management standard is as per bellow.
- Must be based on control of causes, not impact reactive
- Must address all management elements of control
- Must address Normal / Abnormal / Emergency conditions
- Must have measurable parameters
- Must be goal-driven
- Must be relevant to aspects
- Must involve all
- Must promote continual improvement
- Management and not control/eradication
- EMS is managing risks (aspects)
- The essence of aspect management is to avoid high aspects, manage medium aspects, and live with low aspects.
